1.Demand drivers
1.) Power shortage and energy transformation needs
About 880 million people in Africa have no access to electricity, and the electricity coverage rate in rural areas is less than 10%14. 75% of households in Kenya still rely on kerosene lamps for lighting, and urban streets are generally lacking in street lights17. In order to improve the energy structure, many African countries have implemented the "Light Up Africa" plan, giving priority to the promotion of off-grid solar LED products, with the goal of covering 70% of the population's electricity use.
2.)Policy and infrastructure investment promotion
The Kenyan government has pledged to achieve 70% electricity coverage by 2025 and promote municipal lighting renovation projects. For example, Mombasa has invested more than 80 million yuan to upgrade its street lighting system45. The United Nations and international organizations support sustainable lighting solutions through subsidies and technical assistance to accelerate LED penetration.
3.)Economic efficiency and environmental awareness improvement
LED lamps have significant long-term energy-saving advantages. The price in the African market is generally 1.5 times that of China (for example, an 18W energy-saving lamp costs 10 yuan in China and 20 yuan in Kenya), with considerable profit margins15. At the same time, the low-carbon trend is prompting households and businesses to turn to clean energy lighting
2. Mainstream product demand
The African market prefers LED products that are low-cost, durable and suitable for off-grid scenarios, mainly including:
Off-grid solar lighting: such as 1W-5W solar LED bulbs, portable lamps and garden lamps, to meet the needs of rural areas without electricity.
Municipal and commercial lighting: LED street lights, floodlights and panel lights are in strong demand, and Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, is promoting the diversification and upgrading of street lights.
Basic household lamps: Non-solar products such as ceiling lamps and floodlights are growing rapidly due to urban expansion and the increase in residential projects
